Ketosis is a special natural metabolic process, something your body does to keep working. It involves the body producing ketone bodies out of fat, and using them for energy instead of carbs.

What is ketosis and how can you get into it?

 

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which fat provides most of the fuel for the body.

 

If you're healthy and eating a balanced diet, your body controls how much fat it burns, and you don't normally make or use ketones. But when you cut way back on your carbs intake, your body will switch to ketosis for energy. It can also happen after exercising for a long time and during pregnancy, sometimes it could even happen during a long time sleep when your body is not getting enough carbs.  

 

You can get into ketosis by following a very low-carb, ketogenic diet. For healthy people who don't have diabetes and aren't pregnant, ketosis usually kicks in after 3 or 4 days of eating less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day and sometimes as little as 20 grams per day.

 

This requires removing certain food items from your diet, such as grains, potato, candy, sugary soft drinks, etc. You also have to cut back on legumes and fruit.

 

When eating a very low-carb diet, levels of the hormone insulin go down and fatty acids are released from body fat stores in large amounts.

 

Many of these fatty acids are transferred to the liver, where they are oxidized and turned into ketones (or ketone bodies). These molecules can provide energy for the body.

 

It is very important to preserve your lean muscles at the same time. You are at a risk to waste your muscles while your body is not getting enough energy from carbs. Taking enough high quality protein is an effective way to stay healthy and preserve your lean muscle at the same time while burning fat to lose weight. 

 

Effects on Weight Loss

 

The ketogenic diet is a popular weight loss diet that is well-supported by science. As a matter of fact, many researchers have found that ketogenic diets lead to much greater weight loss than low-fat diets.

This is NOT Ketoacidosis 

 

Ketoacidosis is driven by a lack of insulin in the body, seeing more on the patients with type 1 diabetes. Without insulin, blood sugar rises to high levels and stored fat streams from fat cells.  This excess amount of fat metabolism results in the production of abnormal quantities of ketones. The combination of high blood sugar and high ketone levels can upset the normal acid/base balance in the blood and become dangerous.

 

On the other hand, this state of metabolic derangement is not actually possible in a person who can produce insulin, even in small amounts.  The reason is that a feedback loop prevents the ketone level from getting high enough to cause the change in pH that leads to the cascade of bad problems.  The state of nutritional ketosis, generally a controlled, insulin regulated process, has beta-hydroxybutyrate levels between about 0.5 and 3.0 mM.  This is far less than the levels required to cause harm through acid-base abnormalities.
